So…the original plan was to make a bright and colorful red, white and bleu salad to represent the USA on my Eat the World Showcase Tour. Instead, I decided to make this cookie candy popcorn sweet thing, this drive-in movie popcorn. I mean, who needs salads?
Side note: A and I just started using My Fitness Pal to lose a couple winter LBS. This girl needs salads.
Anyway, the salad’s coming back later (maybe 4th of July) but for now, let’s talk about this delightful snack a bit.
You may recall back in December I mentioned being featured on Cut Out & Keep as one of their cooking superstars (Yay! Thanks again!). The fabulous duo in charge of that shtick just put out a super fun arts and crafts DIY book representing a craft from each of the 50 states. Ambitious, yes?
Reading through it, it was definitely fun to see what they came up with to represent the personality of each state. It’s actually a shame this didn’t come out like 6 months ago because it’s full of fun activities for all those kiddos around the Midwest and northeast that were snowed in from school this winter. If you’re into DIY, I recommend picking up a copy.
Anyway, they sent me a book to play with and I figured it’d be fun to make one of their treats for my USA dish. So, from Indiana, in an homage to the drive-in movie theater once so prevalent in that state (23 still up and running!), here’s their explosive drive-in movie popcorn.
As you can see, it’s chock full of all the good things: Oreos, M&Ms, butter, sugar-YES. The one surprise was the Pop Rocks. I was skeptical that a cotton-candy flavored topping would go well with the rest of all the chocolate but don’t you know-it works. Since Pop Rocks aren’t sold at the corner Walgreens, I got mine at Candiality, a specialty candy store.
- 1/4 cup popping corn
- 4 Oreo cookies, crumbled
- 1/2 cup M&Ms (I used plain)
- 4 TB butter, melted
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1 pack Pop Rocks
- Pop the popcorn and lay flat on a baking sheet.
- Spring over the crumbled cookies and M&Ms. Drizzle the butter over all of it.
- Melt the sugar in a saucepan until caramelized, add the salt, and drizzle over the popcorn. Sprinkle the pop rocks on top and serve.
Laurence King Publishing provided me with a copy of this book, but all opinions are, as always, my own.

I see a viral Pinterest-worthy recipe here, Chrissy!
This is the most colourful popcorn I’ve EVER seen … can I come to the movies with you on your next trip, please?
I hope it goes viral, so pin away! It was so good. But so sweet. But so addictive. Make at your own risk!
