London: Now & Then

London: Now & Then

We’re home! It was a great trip, though with a few more transportation hiccups than I’d have preferred. Still, as Mom liked to remind me time and again, it’s all about the adventure.  She’s not wrong.

This trip to celebrate our 40/70th birthdays a year behind schedule had a little bit of everything- some familiar sights and sounds and some new locales to which I can’t wait to return.

The first part of our trip took us to London for Wimbledon, a repeat of sorts of our 2019 family trip, though this time it was just me and Mom. When I asked her where she wanted to go on for our birthdays, she said Wimbledon without hesitation, so it was around it that I built our trip.

I love to write about my travels, but sometimes coming up with a new spin on an old favorite isn’t as easy as I think, but as I wandered around the quiet streets of London one night just before sunset, trodding familiar streets with familiar sights, I marveled at how a city that has changed so much over hundreds of years can still somehow to me seem how, in some aspects, has barely changed at all.  In a way it reminded me how I’ve changed so much in that time span, but then also retain so much of my old ways. Old habits die hard, after all.

These thoughts had me digging through photo archives, digital ones anyway, and so for my 2022 spin on this London trip is taking us all down memory lane. My London, Now & Then.

My first trip to Wimbledon in 2005 had us comfortably planted on Henman Hill to watch our heroes.

This time, I had a decidedly better view.

Our party was bigger the last time around.

The Lawn, 2019

This year was just Mommy & Me.

The Treehouse, 2022

A trip for tea is always a must.

The Ritz, 2007

Kona, 2022

As is a trip to the theatre.

The Globe, 2015

& Juliet, 2022

The markets still are my favorite place to eat.

Portobello Road, 2013

Chinatown, 2019

Eating my favorite chicken sandwich ever.

Maltby St. Market, 2022

And sampling new delicious discoveries each time.

Silly poses always make a trip more fun.

Hampton Court Palace, 2007

St. Katharine’s Docks, 2015

And for anything Harry Potter, I’m game.

King’s Cross, 2007

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, 2019

Celebrity sightings can also be quite fun!

Music and Lyrics premier, 2007

Wimbledon, 2022

And while some people find the English demeanor a bit cold…

IceBar, 2007

back again, 2019

It always helps when you’re with some of your bests.

#IceLondon, 2015

2022

Until next time, London. I can’t wait to do it all over again.
