If you know me IRL, you know that I’ve always been one to poo-poo a little bit on beach vacations. I really, really don’t like hot weather, I don’t love dirt (ie, sand) and there is something about the lay-on-the-beach-drink-in-hand vibe that isn’t really me.
However, if the last year has made me rethink anything, it’s been my attitude about beach vacations (hey, Hawaii!). And while our trip to Crete wasn’t really a 100% beach, and I personally am ready to jump into fall weather head first, it made me remember that a little time in the water ain’t really that bad.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the water. Growing up in Florida means that I do believe that all ails can be cured with a dip in a large body of H2o.
And while I do usually prefer that water to be chlorinated or fresh (#lakelife), how could I resist this?
After a day in the city, we left Heraklion, made a quick pit stop in the mountains and headed for the seas, where we were greeted by blue skies and even blue-er waters.
We hopped in our mini chartered boat and cruised along the coast towards our final destination of Sougia.
Donning blue and white stripes, my own personal uniform for any nautical adventure.
Wind in our hair and faces pointed towards the sun, we marveled at the idyllic coastline
pointing out the tiny villages we passed, dreaming of what life might be like to wake up to this view every day.
Before long, it was time to jump in for a swim! The water was calling!
I was surprised by the rock beach, but then again I suppose it’s without that sand that the water is so perfectly clear.
After an hour that flew by in a flash, the winds cut our swim short, and we packed it in so that we could make it to Sougia safely.
Where we feasted on the freshest catches of the day.
Cooked simply and slathered in olive oil and lemon, as the Greeks do.
And tucked in for more adventures ahead.
Some pics are mine, some are those of the lovely Sophie, who had the foresight to pack a waterproof case for her camera where the rest of us did not.
