Day Two, we bike.
I love riding bikes, and I love biking vacations.
See Epic Ireland and The Tulip Trip. Not pictured, Bavaria, 2010. Pre-blog.
So the fact that this trip had hiking and biking…well, it just combined two of my favorite vacation activities.
The thing about biking though, about anything really, is that I don’t like speed. No to skiing. No to snowboarding. No to roller skating. No to going more than 4 mph over the speed limit.
I like a leisurely flat, or even a slight uphill. But the thing about an uphill is that what goes up, must come down, and there we have the speed issue again.
So while I loved the nice wide flats that we rode on day one of biking, I less enjoyed rolling down the road at a 9% or more incline on hairpin turns.
Like this one.
But still, can you beat this view?
And while I was a little white knuckled on some of those downhills, I still very much enjoyed the wind in my face and the freedom and whimsy that comes from cruising around on two wheels.
All in a line, bike by bike, pedaling along like the Von Trapp kids.
I was singing along in my head, at least.
I mean, don’t we all look like happy campers?
It’s hard to remember to be scared with this looming in the foreground.
I can’t wait until I’m next cruising through mountains on two wheels.
Though perhaps on a more gentle flat!
