Bulgogi Fries with Kimchi

Bulgogi Fries with Kimchi

Bulgogi Fries with Kimchi. My heart. Or more accurately, my stomach.

Kicking off birthday month with one of my favorite foods. I discussed the topic of favorite foods with a friend recently, and now I ask you – if you had to pick ONE food – ONE – not a sweet and a savory – but one lone food to call your absolute favorite- what would you pick?

French fries won for me. They won over ice cream and my heart still breaks that I had to make that Sophie’s Choice call, but there it is.

I love fries in most forms (steak fries, get outta here, but will I still eat them? That would be yes) and so when people find ways to make them more awesome, I’m all about it.

This recipe for bulgogi fries with kimchi comes inspired my one of my favorite local haunts, Homes Brewery, which has a good selection of home brews (love their King Cold Brew) and a great selection of Korean-inspired bar food. All of it, amazeballs.

I also love, love Korean food. Probably my top three types of cuisines.

So as you can see, this dish hits ALL the things. It even has a runny egg- THE BEST kind of egg!

There are two ways to go about this- you can buy a bottled bulgogi marinade (this one‘s pretty good) or you can make your own. I’ve got my recipe below and you’ve seen it before with these very awesome Korean Beef Kimchi Nachos. Make them, make them all.

kimchi fries

I bought super thin-sliced beef from the Asian market down the street which cooked up quickly and went for the vibe I wanted. If you can’t find such beef, I’d go with whatever you’d use for a stir fry. Slice it thin and it’ll be great.

The rest of this is all ready-made. I cheated with frozen french fries, store bought kimchi from the aforementioned market (though you can make your own here – this recipe is the bomb) and a simple fried egg.

Once the beef is cooked, the rest comes together so fast I had it for lunch two days in a row.  And admittedly needed a nap straight after.

Anyway, best served with a cold brew after a long, hot hike. Not such a tall order for us summer birthdays.

Bulgogi Kimchi Fries is a real treat, using Korean marinated thinly sliced beef, frozen fries, fresh kimchi and a perfectly runny egg.

By:

Ingredients
  • 1 TB oil
  • 11/2 pounds thinly sliced beef
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 c sugar
  • 1/4 c water
  • 1 Asian pear, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 TB minced garlic
  • 1/4 c sesame oil
  • 1 TB ground pepper
  • 1 TB grated ginger
  • 1 bag frozen french fries
  • 3/4 cup prepared kimchi, or to taste
  • 4 large eggs, cooked over easy
Directions
  • Step 1 Add the oil, pear, onion, garlic, water, sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, pepper and ginger to a blender. Puree until smooth.
  • Step 2 Add the beef to a medium bowl. Add the marinade and ensure all of the beef is covered. Marinate 30 minutes or overnight.
  • Step 3 When the beef has marinated, cook the french fries according to package directions.
  • Step 4 On a grill pan or in a wok over high heat, cook the beef until cooked thoroughly, about 1-2 minutes per side depending on the thickness of the beef.
  • Step 5 After the beef has cooked, fry the eggs.
  • Step 6 Assemble the plates by diving the prepared ingredients onto four plates, layering the fries, the beef, the kimchi and the eggs. Serve immediately.
