Monday Musings- May 2023
May thoughts
Classic tres leches cake is turned into a decedent tres leches bread pudding, topped with fresh whipped cream and flavored with rich vanilla.
Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner – and if you’re thinking ahead like I am, I’m putting this Grapefruit Sage Margarita out there for your consideration.
A Cinco de Mayo spread worthy of a party, in partnership with Zingerman’s Deli featuring the monthly butcher box.
Hello, Monday.
I’m very much looking forward to having some breathing room next weekend where I’m not running from noon until night. When that happens, you get these roundups on Mondays and the last two weekends have been vile offenders against the zen weekend routine that I much prefer.
All good things- always good things, but they leave me entering Monday a little off kilter. Not the best way to start the week.
Anyhoo, in honor of Earth Day and Earth month, that’s the focus of this week’s schtick. Interesting articles I’ve found about good ole’ Mother Earth, and a few of my favorite products/tips for reducing my own little imprint on the world. Let’s go!
Single use plastics = no bueno for the climate. Here are some tips on how to reduce your use.
I think I use plastic wrap approximately 2 times per month, if that even. I love this type of silicone lid to keep everything fresh in the fridge or covered in the microwave.
No doubt my biggest carbon footprint comes from traveling- and the multiple international flights I find myself on each year. Here’s a lesson for all of us on how to do so more sustainably.
I carry this utensil set when I travel– and get a lot of use out of it!
It’s not all doom and gloom – we are doing better in some ways than we were last Earth Day. Go us!
Can any place be climate resilient? One nation is trying– and given their location – good luck to them!
Don’t love being in nature? Bring nature to you!
I’ve been making my own laundry detergent for YEARS. Literally years. Four simple ingredients, and it saves on the plastic from the laundry jugs, is all natural and yes, definite does get rid of gym/camping/dirt/lake odor. And even does a great job of cat vomit on the carpet!
Also, love these wool dryer balls. Bonus = so cute.
My local dairy sells milk in glass jars at the grocery story (Whole Foods, for me)- does yours? I just return my bottle each week and get my deposit back. Easy!
Those daily contact lenses build up waste fast- luckily, a lot of ophthalmologist offices have containers to recycle them – just collect them as you go and drop them off if you’re passing by! They do not have to be Bausch lenses.
We have a BYOC store in town where you take your own containers and just fill up with daily household and beauty products. See if there is one in your town, too.
I have not discovered an eco-friendly cat litter that works- I’ve tried and and have had a lot of stink to contend with. Any suggestions are appreciated!
That’s it! Let’s all do our best!
Hello, Monday.
Gosh, doesn’t it seem like it takes the same amount of time to catch up from vacation as the amount of time that you’re on it? Being completely wiped last weekend with exhaustion and a mild case of airplane- something, I finally had this weekend to catch up with a few friends and get adult crap done and that meant I didn’t have a chance to sit and breathe until yesterday afternoon. At that point, I tucked in on the couch with a Crawley who was not feeling his 100% (tummy troubles), put on Marry Me (no shame) and got some life admin done. One task off the list at a time.
That included figuring out the last of the logistics for my next trip in a month (#AmalfeelingGood (? – still working on it)). It’s gonna be a good time.
Anyway, how are you? More travel tales coming at you this week. Until then, here’s what caught my eye in the frenzy of the last week:
A case for oatmeal (my winter breakfast staple).
There’s a “new water” apparently.
Cheat sheet- spring get-together menu.
How to be more wise.
Finally read this one– highly recommend!
I hate to remind you that it’s almost swimsuit season, but I recently discovered this brand for the sporty cuts and I’m digging them.
If you need a new set of hikers for the summer, these are my faves.
That’s all she wrote. Have a great week!
