Castles and Cathedrals, Palma

Castles and Cathedrals, Palma

Let’s talk about Spain!

I’m finally home, about 90% over the jet-lag and ready to reminisce about my latest jaunt to The Continent with Ham. In case you missed it, we spent the week on the lovely island of Mallorca.  It was wonderful and beautiful and really everything that a spring break should be, and I’m talking the grown up way without early morning returns from Da Club.

We did laugh out loudly when people asked if we would be going to the club. Hard pass on that for us and our 10 pm bedtimes.

Waking up on the first day in Palma, we were engulfed in the warmth and sunshine that are currently denied us in these Michigan spring days.  Seventy degrees and sunny? Where the sea and sky are the same color of perfect blue?

Yes, please. Let’s explore!

But first…

We had more than a few people warn us that there wasn’t a whole lot to do in Palma, but for us, it certainly had enough for us to fill two full days with walking and eating and more walking, with a hint of shopping and old building exploring.

After all, isn’t that the best kind of day?

We started out heading to the castle.

It was certainly hard to miss, and while we didn’t venture inside, there were plenty of nooks and crannies in which to play otherwise.

It’s also right next to the grand cathedral. Golden sandstone intricately and beautifully ornate.

Don’t forget to look up!

After that, we set off to explore the cobbled alleys, my favorite way to go about.

And stopped for a quick bite to power us through the day.

Palma is absolutely gorgeous, combining the old with the new, impressively clean and adorned with enough greenery to keep us well shaded.

So lovely.

Exploring continued until dinner, where we had the best meal of the trip, El Pilon.

Shishitos, perfectly charred.

Tortilla espanola.

Crispy fresh calamari with aioli

Our favorite-favorite, stewed fava beans with seared goat cheese and honey.

It’s a tiny hole in the wall, and they don’t take reservations, but I’d heartily agree that it was so worth any wait.

If you want to plan ahead, I also highly recommend Buscando del Norte. We only were able to pop in here for a few bites, but wish we could have eaten the whole menu.

Stuffed and happy, we took in the city at night, which was just as breathtaking.

And tucked ourselves in for the next days ahead.
