You know I love a hike and so when we booked our trip to Crete, I wasn’t mad that it included a day on the trails.
I don’t need every vacation I take to be full of activities that make my bones ache, but I like to make sure that the blood gets pumping, preferably outside. Bonus points if the weather is perfect.
Our day at Agia Irini Gorge was just that.
Fun fact: during the Ottoman era, rebels had their dens here and, in 1866, 1000 women and children escaped from the Turks through this gorge. It was quite the sight to see.
With blue skies for days, our group took the to very rocky train for what turned out to be about 4 hours straight down.
Most people prefer the down, but being often times clumsy, I actually prefer the up. Plus, more satisfaction in reaching the top of a hill than the bottom, right?
Still, I couldn’t deny that the views were still spectacular.
And with sage and rosemary lining our path, it was quite the fragrant trip down.
With plenty of nature to distract us from the task ahead.
And rock faces painted shades of gold.
Despite the somewhat slippery footing, our group was all smiles!
Maybe the view from the bottom isn’t so bad after all.
It really was GORGE-ous!
